Her parents made sure she was getting dance lessons, and she also trained at the Santa Monica Playhouse when she was a kid. She started acting in 1996 after she received the role in the TV drama Party of Five. After being accepted into New York University by Kate Hudson, her goal was to pursue a career in show business, but not get an education. After acting in some minor films, she landed the role that proved to be the most memorable role in her professional career. The role she was chosen for was Penny Lane in the comedy drama film Almost Famous. While the film did not do well in the box office, it was well received by reviewers and it made Kate a star in the American film industry.
